Butler Grill is located
directly on Watauga Lake. Watauga Lake is an
amazing feat of engineering created by the
Tennessee Valley Authority to create
hydroelectric energy, create an aquatic
preserve, and bring more visitors to the
Tennessee area. The Watauga River was dammed
in the 1940’s to create this reservoir, and
with its immense size, the entire town of
“Old Butler” had to be relocated as the
valley of these Appalachian Mountains was
immersed. Interestingly enough, though, this
man-made lake remains one of the cleanest
lakes in the nation, recycling itself
completely twice a year. The emerald water
is so clear that you can see underwater
clearly for more than ten feet!
Many visitors enjoy the different
recreational opportunities offered by
Watauga Lake. From speedboats and pontoons
to kayaks and canoes, boating is a favorite
pastime at Watauga Lake. Many different boat
slip marinas such as the Fish Springs, Cove
Ridge, Mallard Cove, Pioneer Landing, and
Lake Shore Marinas are accessible on Watauga
Lake and offer boaters a chance to pull over
and take a break from the open water.
In addition to boating, hikers, campers, and
day-visitors enjoy all Watauga Lake has to
offer. The Appalachian Trail connects with
Watauga Lake and crosses the Watauga River,
so for all you hiking enthusiasts, this is a
location not to miss. Campers can spend
their weekends (or weekdays!) at the Bayview,
Watauga Dam Tailwater, and Cardens Bluff
campgrounds. Many campgrounds offer
individual campsites, tables, fire pits or
grills, running water, and in some cases
even heated showers. Day-visitors can enjoy
locations like the Shook Branch cove that
comes fully-equipped with grills, flushing
toilets, and even a sand beach with a
shallow swimming area for younger patrons.
All of these amenities are located on
Watauga Lake, and while you’re enjoying the
outdoors, take some time to have a fresh,
warm dinner while observing the lakefront
view at the Butler Grill.
